The Oscan Oracle: from the Ancient Janarra of the Moon is a book and oracle deck made up of the letters of the Oscan Alphabet. Rauri and I are sharing some of the letters/cards in the deck in this and the previous posts to give an idea of what you may find there. This week we share Membrane Work to help highlight the concept of the Membranes as articulated in Theresa’s book, Membranes of Hope: A Guide to Attending to the Spiritual Boundaries that Keep Life Systems Healthy from the Personal to the Cosmic as well as her upcoming class on Understanding and Caring for the Personal Membrane.

Membrane Work

Lifesystems at all levels—personal, family, village, Earth, and cosmic—need healthy containers in which to actualize themselves, grow, and thrive. Another word for these containers is membranes.

A membrane separates what is within it from what is outside of it. Everything that is alive and evolving needs a container within which to do that. Babies grow within wombs, families thrive in a contained space held by the elders, communities grow and thrive within the entirety and intention of the group, and ecosystems are held in etheric membranes or containers created by the trees.

When Membrane Work comes to you, there is a need for more containment around the issue at hand. It is time to pull in and nurture the precious interior or original intent of that which needs containment. Reduce overexposure and increase listening and quiet time. Attend to the soul of the matter.

Ritual: Attending to our skin, one of our most important membranes

  • To begin to get a feel for caring for a membrane, begin with your own personal skin.
  • When was the last time you spent time with your own skin?
  • This can be accomplished with “skin time,” which may include nudity or time in a bath or shower where you are taking time to touch and be in contact with your own skin.
  • It may also mean applying moisturizer or allowing your hands to explore the contours of your bare skin with a loving touch.
  • It may mean hugging another skin to skin, as long as it is consensual for both.
  • Consider this: the skin, the largest organ in your body, is a container for everything that is inside it. It has multiple layers and cares for your interiority by being what it is, a membrane. Can you feel how appreciating this membrane and sending it love helps you feel more contained?
  • Now begin to imagine skins in the form of circular energetic fields around other things in your life—relationships, your job, a passion, your family, your home—and start to imagine how you can care for these nurturing and protective skins with offerings and intentional care.

Deep Dive

The membrane is a permeable boundary with intelligence and discernment that allows in or keeps out that which it senses is appropriate or best for the life system within it. Within this interior space created by the membrane is a oneness—an articulation of a cohesive whole that may become more of its original intent by the very act of being contained and held. These precious interiors need this protection and containment in order to thrive. These interiors include a “me,” an “us,” or a group with a shared ideal or value.

If a person, relationship, family, or community, indeed even a dream or vision is not held inside a safe container or permeable membrane, it will flail and not be able to articulate its intention. Relationships need containers and boundaries that are protected and nurtured as well.

Are you protecting and containing yourself, your family, and your time?

Theresa C. Dintino’s Membranes of Hope: A Guide to Attending to the Spiritual Boundaries that Keep Life Systems Healthy from the Personal to the Cosmic, offers information and rituals to help care for the membranes as well as maintain the integrity of that which is held within them.
